What causes skin to age?

Intrinsic ageing is a physiological process, often dependant on genetic factors, which cannot be reversed or slowed down. The extrinsic ageing is due to factors such as excessive UV exposure, environmental insults such as smoking and can be addressed by the following.

Reducing UV exposure

  • You can protect your skin from sun damage by wearing sunscreen daily. This should be a part of your daily routine, as habitual as brushing your teeth.
  • Apply sunscreen as directed on the label. Many people don’t put enough on, so be liberal when you apply it and reapply every 1 to 3 hours or more frequently after swimming, sweating or direct sun exposure.
  • Avoid sunbeds and wear a high factor sunscreen in the summer months and on sunny holidays.
  • Wearing sunglasses helps to reduce lines around the eyes caused by squinting.

Avoid smoking

Smoking speeds up the breakdown of collagen and constricts blood vessels which carry nutrients and oxygen to your skin. Smokers are more likely to get wrinkles earlier.

Avoid yo-yo dieting

Eating disorders such as bulimia and anorexia create stress, which can cause premature ageing of the skin and will also affect nails and hair.

Consider antioxidants

If you use a skin care product that has antioxidants, apply it in the morning before using sunscreen. Both products work in tandem to protect your skin from any damage.

Eat Avocados

Avocados are high in Vitamin A and omega-3 fatty acids that help to clear dead skin cells. They have glutamine – an amino acid that acts as a skin cleanser and protects from harsh environmental factors helping to prevent wrinkles.
